What is self-determination?

California's Self-Determination Program (SDP) lets individuals with disabilities choose how they spend their budget provided to them by their Regional Center, hence the name "self-determination". Typically, individuals have to receive approval for vendorized services, but with SDP, they can spend their budget with increased flexibility.

To be eligible for SDP, you or your family member must fall under the following conditions:

  1. Have an intellectual or developmental disability

  2. Currently or will soon be receiving services from a regional center

  3. Not be living in a long-term licensed health care facility

  4. Be above the age of three or eligible for services (under the Lanterman act)
